Definition- A propaganda device that attempts to convince their audience that they, and their ideas, are "of the people."
Bill Clinton (right) and Al Gore (Left) are eating McDonalds and walking around in informal clothes, which is emphasizing on the fact that he lives like “the common man”. This photo was used for the 1992 campaign, which was for Clinton to gain the trust and the votes of the middle and lower classes. It points out that Clinton lives like them, so he would be able to empathize with their problems and be more in their favor.
The short shorts, the ill-fitting hats, the copious amounts of sweat, Al’s t-shirt of “the world”, Al’s junk, Bill’s thighs, the McDonald’s cups: all of these serve as a representation that Clinton is not separated from the lifestyle of the middle class and has become one of the many “common men”, therefore compelling more middle class people to vote for him.
